Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport History Timeline

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

1939: Sonoma County purchases 339 acres four miles north of Santa Rosa and begins constructing a runway.

1942: The Army takes over airport and adds 826 acres, along with extending the runway, building a second runway and installing taxiways and other facilities.

1943: U.S. Fourth Air Corps operates airport as Santa Rosa Army Airfield. At its peak, as many as 500 aircraft and 10,000 troops were based at the field.

1946: Sonoma County resumes operation of airport.

1972: Feeder and commuter service begins, flying passengers from Santa Rosa to San Francisco International Airport and other destinations.

1989: United Express and American Eagle offer flights to Los Angeles and San Jose. American Eagle discontinued service in 1993 and United Express curtailed service, ending it in 2001.

2000: Sonoma County Board of Supervisors changes name to Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport to honor the long-time resident and “Peanuts” comic creator.

2007: Horizon Air begins service to Los Angeles and Seattle in March. In October, service to Portland is added.

2008: Horizon Air extends service to Las Vegas April 24.
